Those are two strands of Harris Tweed from two ends of the same skein. Not a ball, cut and spliced to the necessary weight. That’s the same skein. I know one should expect natural variations from a natural fibre like wool, but come on. It’s stripey!
That being said, I’m not too sad about it. I made the discovery a point when I could use it so it looks like a ‘design element’ rather than a cock-up (no, I didn’t ball up all the yarn before I started knitting, that’s just not my way). I’ve divided the stripey bit in half and am using it for the lower half of the sleeves of my back-laced tunic. I think I can get away with it. This isn’t massively different, right?

I was going to start this post with a quote from the Times story about the earthquake, but since I read it this morning the relevant part has been edited out. For your info, it claimed that subsequent to the tremors 12 people in Dudley walked into the police station in their pyjamas. I suspected at the time that this had nothing to do with tectonics; the deletion seems to suggest I was right.
Obligatory retelling of my earthquake story:
As I woke, my exact thoughts were ‘I wonder if that’s me still shaking, or if it’s the bed’. Then it stopped, so I decided I didn’t have early onset Parkinsons and went back to sleep. Imagine my surprise at the headlines this morning – survival instinct? Me? Apparently not.
I would like to know, however, why I thought I was shaking already. Oh the pondering induced by that little ’still’.
In other news, there’s nothing like the cheap thrill of pausing in a car park on the way home to yank one’s tights up. (No elastic left round the waist. To be fair, I’m pretty sure said tights are about 6 years old, so they’ve done me some good service. Better service than the Tesco pants which have lasted about four wears before developing holes and spent much of the day trying to follow my tights down to my knees. Seriously, guys, I know you get what you pay for in this world but 20p per wear is not terribly good value.)
Forgive me, I seem to be doing a Paxman. Too much knitting. I’ve given myself a knit-by date for Tubey since I’ve had a splurge and bought shagloads of wool with my bonus money. I only ordered on Sunday and I’ve already got a ’sorry, we tried to deliver at at a time we know nobody in this country is actually going to be home, so now you have to come and fetch your package from us in your leisure time at the reduced and inconvenient opening hours during which we deign to open the sorting office’ card.
I wonder if I’m excited enough about the possible contents to go over there at 7am.
